Hummer H2
Engine
Pumping the life blood of the new H2 is the Vortec 6000 V8 engine.
With a 4-speed auto transmission, an estimated 316 horsepower
(@4600 rpm) and estimated 360 lbs./ft (@4000 rpm) of torque,
we're talking about the kind of power most SUV's can only dream
about.
Power balanced to help make smooth cruising on
the highway as natural as climbing fallen logs when you're out
in the rough stuff.
The V8 uses a Hitachi throttle body as a part
of our precise electronic throttle control (ETC) system so the
H2 provides two different throttle progressions, depending on
whether it is operating on pavement or off. Out in the rough
stuff, a touchy gas pedal would make for some very herky-jerky
off-roading. So in the H2 we've taken throttle control to the
next level. With the transfer case either in the High Open or
High Lock mode, the driver gets normal acceleration for everyday
city and highway requirements. However, off-road operation in
the low open or low locked mode, requires a slower, more controlled
throttle response.
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
Adding to the overall sense of control in the H2 is a four-channel
antilock braking/traction control system (ABS/TCS). In addition
to providing optimum control on slippery surfaces, the ABS can
detect and adjust its braking capabilities to rough off-road
surfaces like gravel and potholes.
The H2's ABS is uniquely designed to detect rough
road surfaces and respond accordingly. As a result you may not
even be aware that the ABS system is engaged, you'll just come
to a smooth responsive stop.
The brakes also include GM's standard dynamic
rear proportioning feature, which monitors wheel speed and,
as needed, automatically modulates the pressure applied to the
rear brakes to help ensure that braking loads are balanced between
the front and rear brakes.
The brake design itself also includes large organic
brake pads and twin piston cast iron calipers for the front
and rear (57 mm-sized calipers for the front; 51 mm-sized calipers
for the rear).
4-wheel Drive
H2's standard powertrain-integrated, two-speed, full-time 4-wheel
drive system is highly advanced and extremely capable, with
an electronically controlled transfer case providing five different
operational modes it creates optimal performance under any driving
condition.
Front Suspension
The independent front torsion bar has a 46mm diameter tubular
front stabilizer bar with unique tuning and a 4000 lb. capacity
axle.
The front shocks have a large, high-strength 40mm
center tube as well as a secondary integral bump stop feature.
This allows them to absorb jolts at two junctures.
Rear Suspension
The optional rear air spring suspension system has several features
making it smoother on-road and even more capable off. With a
longer suspension stroke it can handle bigger bumps and jolts
while off-road. Longer, 719mm length shocks are used to provide
an additional 20mm of rebound travel over that of the coil spring
suspension. This improves traction by helping to maintain wheel
contact with the ground over undulating terrain. And the shock
absorbers, although having the same 46mm diameter as those with
the coil spring suspension, also feature a larger-diameter size
rod for increased durability.
The rear air suspension also has an automatic
load leveling system and rear height elevation system. If you
load up the rear of the H2 the load leveling system will detect
the drop in ride height and will pump more air into the springs
to restore a level condition. And if you need just a couple
more inches of clearance the rear height elevation system will
increase the rear height by 50mm (2in) and increase the rear
departure angle from 35.9 to 41 .
TCS/TC2
The Single Wheel traction control system gives you traction
when you need it most. The system detects a slipping wheel and
applies brake pressure to slow it down, it then takes the energy
that would have otherwise gone to the slipping wheel and transfers
it to a wheel that's not slipping. With this system, you could
have as many as three wheels on a slippery surface (virtually
no traction) and still get enough torque out of the fourth wheel
to move the truck up a 10% grade.
The H2's base TCS mode is great for normal hard
surface traction needs, like on-road use, off-road rock crawling
or ice and snow. But once you hit a variable surface like deep
mud, sand or gravel the TC2 takes over. The TC2 works just like
TCS but allows limited wheel spin to help gain even more traction.
So with three transfer case selections, two rear
axle differential selections and two modes provided by the TCS
mode switch, you actually have a total of seven driving mode
selections in the H2, providing you with the ability to match
the performance of the H2 with almost any driving condition.
Flat side body panels
Even at a glance the H2's rugged good looks indicate its HUMMER
DNA. The H2's body lines and nearly vertical windshield and
windows, not only call to mind the H1, but also create a significant
amount of interior room and better. Exposed components, like
hood lift handles, hood latches and fasteners, gives H2's appearance
a component-assembled quality.
Wheelbase
The H2's 122.8 in. wheelbase combined with its 189.8 in. body
length not only help give the H2 an incredibly smooth ride both
on road and off, they help make the H2 stable and help prevent
it from pitching in rough terrain.
Overhangs
Extremely short overhangs, including a 32.6 in. front overhang
and a 34.6 in. rear overhang provide high approach and departure
angles, helps the H2 to drive right into a hole and out again
without getting hung up in front or rear.
Tread width
A wide tread due to the wheels being positioned at the extreme
corners, gives the H2 incredible stability off-road, and even
more on-road.
Bumpers
Like many other H2 components, the bumpers are unusually large
and hefty. They also have a two-sectional design to help reduce
weight while still providing optimum protection.
The front bumper also includes large, H1 military-style
retrieval loops. The rear bumper includes tow loops which can
also serve as tie-downs and both bumpers have access holes for
the hitch receivers which can be attached to the chassis. The
front receiver accommodates a winch, which can be plugged in
just like a trailer hitch. The front receiver, like the rear
receiver, also accommodates a regular class 3-trailer hitch,
providing additional flexibility by allowing you to nose a boat
into a garage for example.
Skid Plate
Nobody likes to resort to it, but sometimes a skid plate is
the only language boulders understand.
That's why you'll find a 4mm thick, stamped aluminum
front engine shield that runs from the front bumper of the H2
right back to the transmission. It angles prominently at the
front, with the H2 logo embossed just below the bumper. 1in.
diameter tubular steel, ladder-type shield helps protect the
transmission and the exhaust system's two catalytic converters.
A third, high-tensile strength, galvanized steel
shield protects the transfer case.
3-Piece Ladder Frame
An extremely strong, fully welded ladder-type frame, featuring
a modular three-piece design and several hydroformed components
provides outstanding strength, stiffness and dimensional accuracy
for the H2's chassis.
Front section - The hydroformed front section
helps create the H2's high approach angle. To improve the frontal
crush zone, GM engineers added reinforcements in key box sections
of the frame, enhancing its ability to absorb energy, crush
and collapse. Uncommonly flat crossmembers were used around
the transmission mounting area to preclude hang-up points. And
the front frame section incorporates a GM-first standard winch
receiver designed to handle an impressive 9,000 lb winch.
Mid frame - The mid-frame has a stamped-steel
box section design with common inner and outer sections and
a clamshell-welded configuration. It's strength and stiffness
help minimize ride and body vibrations, contributing to a smooth
ride on-road and providing the strength and stiffness required
to handle the severe bumps and jolts that come when you're off-road.
Rear frame - The hydroformed, short rear-frame
section helps create a high departure angle. It's heavily reinforced
in key areas for the H2's 8,600 lb. GVWR capacity. The rear
section incorporates a standard, integral trailer hitch receiver
built right into the last crossmember of the frame rail and
developed into the bumper. And a class 3 trailer hitch comes
standard.
Active Safety
The H2 comes standard with front airbags*, child seat top-tether
anchors for additional safety for younger passengers, lap and
B-pillar mounted shoulder belts, adjustable headrests on all
seats and assist handles throughout the vehicle.
*Always use safety belts and proper child restraints,
when properly secured in a rear seat. See the Owner's Manual
for more safety information.
Passive Safety
OnStar's® Safe & Sound package* is provided for one year.
It includes automatic emergency assistance when air bags deploy
and remote unlocking. Steering wheel controls for radio enable
you to manipulate radio controls with your hands on the wheel
and your eyes on the road.
Front, rear, and side window defoggers keep all
windows clear of moisture to optimize visibility at all times.
A light sensitive inside rearview mirror with
compass and outside temperature display automatically dims to
the proper level to minimize glare from lights behind the driver
after dark.
Large, power-tilt, light sensitive outside rearview
mirrors have a "curb" feature which tilts them down,
while in reverse, to show you the curb when parking. This power-adjustable
feature can also help you coming off a rock or step during off-road
operations. They are also heated to keep ice or snow from restricting
visibility and they have a power fold mechanism to protect them
when going through tight spots.
The H2 also has rear door child lockout protection.
*Call 1.800 OnStar-7 or visit www.onstar.com for
system limitations and details.
Security
A big tough truck ought to be able to defend itself don't you
think? So did we. That's why the H2 comes standard with several
security measures it uses for self-defense.
Among them is a PASSLock® anti-theft vehicle security
system, which allows the vehicle to be started only with the
proper key.
It also has a content alarm anti-theft system,
which sounds the horn and flashes the lights if the vehicle
is tampered with or jostled too much.
The H2 also has a battery rundown protection system,
which shuts down any interior lighting systems that have been
left on too long while the engine's not running, so you never
come back to a dead engine.
Another interesting security feature is the THEFTLOCK®
for the RDS radio. Basically the radio knows a portion of your
H2's Vehicle Identification Number. If the radio is stolen,
or moved to a different vehicle, it will not operate and "LOCKED"
will be displayed. Pretty cool stuff, huh?
Homelink®*, standard in the H2, allows drivers
to program up to three different signals for remote control
item, such as the garage door opener, house lights and an electric
gate.
And to show that it is doing it's best to protect
you too; the H2 also comes standard with remote keyless entry.
In uncertain situations this feature allows you to remotely
honk the horn as an attention-getter.
